The 8-week moving checklist for South African households

Transfer dates, municipal accounts, school transfers and fibre migrations all run on different clocks. Here is the order to do them in.

8 weeks out — lock the date

Your transfer or lease date is the anchor for everything else. Confirm it in writing with the attorney or landlord before you book anything. Then get removal quotes: two to four weeks' notice is comfortable, but month-end slots — and especially the last Friday of the month — go first.

6 weeks out — declutter properly

You pay to move volume, so every item you do not take is money back in your pocket. Be ruthless with the garage, the spare room and the "I will fix it one day" pile. Sell what has value on Facebook Marketplace or Gumtree, and book a charity collection for the rest — many will fetch from your door in Gauteng.

4 weeks out — start the admin

This is the part that catches people. Give notice on your fibre line (most ISPs need 30 days), submit a change of address to your bank, medical aid and insurers, and open the municipal account at the new property. If you are moving between municipalities, request a final reading and clearance figure at the old one now rather than later.

3 weeks out — schools and pets

Request transfer letters and the last report from the current school, and confirm placement at the new one. Book the vet for a check-up if you are moving provinces, and get a travel crate your dog has actually seen before, not one that arrives the morning of the move.

2 weeks out — start packing the edges

Books, out-of-season clothes, décor, the good crockery, the garage. Label every carton by room and contents, not just "kitchen". If we are packing for you, this is when the cartons and materials arrive.

1 week out — confirm everything

Confirm the move with us, confirm lift bookings and move permits with both bodies corporate, and confirm your access with estate security. Arrange somewhere for small children and pets to be on the day — a move is not a spectator sport.

48 hours out — defrost and disconnect

Defrost and thoroughly dry the fridge and freezer, run the washing machine empty and drain it, and disconnect the gas. Pack an "open first" box: kettle, mugs, teabags, toilet paper, phone chargers, medication, a torch, and clean sheets for every bed.

Move day — your only job is to point

Keep passports, IDs, title deeds, jewellery, laptops and medication with you personally. Do a final walk-through of every cupboard, the geyser cupboard and the garden shed before the truck leaves. Take meter readings and photograph them. Then sign off, hand over the keys, and let us do the rest.
